Updated Traditional Kitchen Design - Hyde Park

Project type

Kitchen Design - Residential

Date

2024

Location

Hyde Park - Chicago Illinois

Nestled in a classic 1890s Hyde Park townhome, this kitchen redesign strikes a thoughtful balance between modern function and traditional charm. The homeowners were ready to say goodbye to a dated 1990s remodel that felt disconnected from the character of their home—and from itself. With a vision for a cleaner, more open layout, we reimagined the space to feel both fresh and timeless, honoring the home’s history while making it work beautifully for modern living.

Sage green lower cabinets ground the design with a soft, natural hue, while crisp white uppers and white appliances keep the space feeling light and cohesive. A marble-look large-format backsplash adds a sense of elegance without overwhelming the room, and unlacquered brass hardware offers a warm, lived-in patina that nods to the past. Black sconces and a coordinating pendant light introduce a touch of contrast and modern edge, completing the look with just the right amount of visual weight.

A major shift in layout brought new life to the flow of the home. By swapping the fridge and the range we removed the visual block that previously blocked much of the visual sight-lines to the back of the home. An open peninsula now bridges the kitchen with the rest of the living space, offering a welcoming spot to sit and connect while cooking. The result is a kitchen that feels intentional, inviting, and perfectly in step with the rest of the home.
